The merits of crying the Chief of Martyrs AS
AhlulBayt AS recommended on setting up funerals to Abu Abdullah Al-Hussain AS, and to cry on the calamity of Chief of Martyrs AS. Therefore they were setting up funerals, poet were attending to read sad poetry which melt hearts, then people start to cry, weeping, and wailing for the tragedy of Chief of Martyrs AS. Imam Al-Sajjad AS used to avoid eating and drinking during the days of Ashura, and crying whenever he see a woman of Bani Hashim (The clan of Hussain AS), and memorizing beheading his thirsty father, captivity of women from one country to another. Wherefore he used to set up funerals in his house, and also the Lady Zainab AS used to set up funerals in her house. AhlulBayt were recommending the reader of poetry to read it with sad and melodious voice, which means they were looking for quality of voice. This was clear in the story of Abu Haroon with Imam al-Sadiq AS. When Abo Haroon read a poem laments Imam Hussain AS, then Imam AS said to him,” Do not read that on that way, but read it as your people read at home” which means Imam AS want it with a sad melodious voice, not only a speech delivery. Then Abu Haroon read his poem: Come cross by the body of Hussain and say to his pure bones, O Bones, you still remaining wet with blood, Life became undesirable since horses which eyes were covered smashed you, And cry on the pure the sons of pure man and pure woman. To the end of the poem, then the council cried, mourned, and wept loudly on Chief of Martyrs AS. De’bil-AlKhuza’ee” the celebrated poet and lover of AhlulBait AS”came in the presence of Imam Reza AS. Imam AS mentioned regarding reciting poems in honour of Imam Hussain AS and weeping. Imam AS said, “O Debil! One who cries on my grandfather, Allah will forgive his sins”. Then a curtain was drawn between the ladies of the house and those present, so that people could grieve on the calamities of Imam Husain AS. Tears appeared in eyes of Debil while he recited this couplet: O Fatima what would you do if you see Hussain laying dead and thirsty next to the shores of Euphrates, O Fatima you would hit your cheeks next to him, and tears will fall over you face, O Fatima rise up and mourn the stars of heavens which were fallen on the desert. Whenever hearing this couplet Imam Reza was fainting and crying loudly. Ahlulbayt recommended on setting up funerals to memorize their tragedies, especially the tragedy of Chief of Martyrs AS. Imam al-Sadiq AS, “ May Allah exhibit mercy on those who revive our issue and mission!” How great is this supplication from an Imam for the sake of his nation. Reviving issues of Ahlulbayt through commitment to do the duties e.g. prayers, fasting and other duties which Muslims adults have to do as setting up funerals for Ahlulbayt AS. Traditions of the merits of crying from Shiite references 1. The Holy Prophet SAWA said: “O' Fatimah! Every eye shall be weeping on the Day of Judgment except the eye which has shed tears over the tragedy of Husain (AS) for surely, that eye shall be laughing and shall be given the glad tidings of the bounties and comforts of Paradise.” 2. Imam Zanul ‘Abdeen Ali b. Al-Hussain AS,” Any faithful his eyes tears until they fall on his cheeks for our sake, because of harm caused by our enemies in this world, Allah will put him in a satisfying high house in heaven” 3. Imam Reza AS said, “O Son of Shabib! If you wish to cry for anything or anyone, cry for al-Hussain Ibn Ali AS for he was slaughtered like a sheep. Eighteen members from his family who were unparalleled on earth were also killed along with him. Certainly, the seven heavens and earths cried because of the murder of al-Hussain AS. Four thousand Angels descended on earth to aid him, but (when they were allowed to reach there) they found him martyred. So they remained at his grave, disheveled and dusty, and will remain there until the rising of al-Qa’im (Imam al-Mahdi AS), whereupon they will aid him. Their slogan will be, ‘Vengeance for the blood of al-Husain.’ O Son of Shabib! My father related to me from his father, who related from his grandfather that when my grandfather Imam al-Husain AS was martyred, the sky rained blood and red sands. O Son of Shabib! When you weep over the afflictions of al-Husain AS so that tears flow from your eyes onto your cheeks, Allah will forgive all your sins, big or small, few or numerous. O Son of Shabib! If you wish to meet Allah, the mighty and the majestic, free of sin, then perform the Ziyarat of al-Hussain AS. O Son of Shabib! If it pleases you to abide in the palaces of Paradise in company of the Prophet SAWA and his family, then invoke Allah’s curse upon the murderers of Imam al-Hussain AS. O Son of Shabib! If you wish to earn the reward of those who were martyred with al-Hussain AS, then whenever you remember him, say, ‘If only I had been with them so that I would have attained the great felicity.’ O Son of Shabib! If you desire to be with us in the highest degree of Paradise, then grieve in our sorrows and rejoice in our happiness. Remain attached to our love, for even if a person loves a stone, Allah shall resurrect him with it on the Day of Judgment.” 4. Imam Al-Sadiq AS narrated his father, said, “I am the slain one of tears; I was killed suffering an adversity. Indeed whenever a grieved person comes to me, Allah will never allow him to leave to his family unless he is happy.” Imam al-Reza AS said, “The day of calamity on Imam Hussain AS has injured our eyes و has caused tears to pour, has humiliated our noble once in the land of calamities and disasters, has inherited us the calamities and disaster until the doomsday. Those who weep should weep over the likes of Hussain AS for surely, weeping over him does away with one's great sins.”. Sheikh al Sadooq narrated crying Imam Hussain, he said, “ Mohamed b. Ibrahim b. Izhaq told us’ Ahmad b. Moahmmed Alhamdani, narrated Ali b. Alhassan b. Ali b. Faddal, narrated his father said,’ Imam Reza AS said: “he who memorized our calamities and cried for what to us will, he will be with us in the same level in the day of judgment. He who sits in a gathering in which our affairs (and our path and aims) are discussed and revived, his heart shall not die on the day (Day of Judgment) when hearts shall die (of fear)”. Sunni narration of the merits of crying 1. Abdullah ibn Naji narrated from his father who said: ‘I went with Ali AS, they faced Nainawa as they were going to the battle of Siffeen then Ali called out and said: “O Aba Abdullah, have patience, O Aba Abdullah have patience on the bank of the Euphrates’. I asked: ‘What do you mean by Aba Abdullah’? Ali AS replied: ‘One day I went into the room of the Prophet SAWA whilst his eyes were gushing with tears, I therefore asked of him: ‘O Prophet SAWA, has someone angered you? What makes your eyes gush with tears?’ He SAWA replied: ‘Gabriel has just left me; he (Gabriel) told me that Hussain AS will be killed on the banks of the Euphrates river. Gabriel then said to him AS: ‘Shall I let you smell its soil (wherein Hussain will be killed)? I said: ‘Yes’. So Gabriel extended his hand and presented a handful of the soil and gave it to me, I was then unable to prevent my eyes from gushing into tears”’(1) 2. Ahmed b. Israel said, I saw in the book of Ahmed b. Mohammed b. Hanbal, written with his hand,” Aswad b. ‘Amer Abu Abdul-Rahman said, Alrabe’ b. Monather narrate his father said,” Hussain b. Ali was saying, “ He whose eyes dropped tears for us, or tears just one tear, Allah will settle him in heaven”(2). 3. Ahmed b. Hanbal stated in his Mosnad,’ Abdullah told us, my father said, Abdul Rahman b. Mahdi said,” Hamada b. Salamah narrated Ammar said,” I heard Um-Salamah ( the prophet wife) said, “ I heard the jinns mourning for Hussain ibn Ali’.” (3) 4.
