Singing is the nest of hypocrisy
The meaning of singing in language and terminology Music, according to the New National Dictionary, means "Art of combining sounds or sequences of notes into harmonious patterns pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the emotions; melody". In jurisprudence, vocal music means: "Prolongation and vibration of sound with variation of the pitch to such an extent that people may say that ‘he/she is singing’." Prevention from singing in Quran and the holy traditions 1. Abu-Baseir said: Abu Abdullah Al-Sadiq (a.s.) said, Regarding the verses “Those who do not give false testimony, and when they come upon vain talk, pass by nobly” and “So avoid the abomination of idols, and avoid false speech (Quran, 22:30)”, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says: “What is meant are gatherings of amusement and vanity and singing”.(1) 2. Abu Osama said, Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: "Music is the nest of hypocrisy."(2) 3. Mus'adah bin Zeiad said,:, "I was in the company of Imam Ja'far Al-Sadiq (a.s.) when a person said, "When I go to the toilet, I can hear the singing girls of my neighbour. Sometimes, I remain (in toilet) longer so that I may listen to more of it." Imam (a.s.) said: "Desist from listening to music and songs attentively." Then this man further said, "Master, I do not go to music gatherings! I only hear the sounds!" Imam Ja'far Al-Sadiq (a.s.) said, "Have you not read this Quranic verse "Surely, the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these shall be questioned about that?" (Quran 17:36) The man replied, "I was not aware of this verse. I regret my actions. I shall not do so in the future. I repent for my past sins and I seek forgiveness from my Lord." Seeing his condition, Imam (a.s.) said, "Get up ! Stand up have bath and pray to Allah as much as you wish. You have certainly been involved in a deadly sin and a terrible situation. You have repented for it and I thank Allah for that; and I seek forgiveness of Allah for all those things that He dislikes. Certainly, Allah only dislikes the evil things. Leave the evil things to the evil people because there are different people suitable for different things." (3) 4. Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq (a.s) said, "One who plays music in the house for forty days and men entered that house, will be beset by a Satan named Alqafander. Allah will cause that Satan to occupy each and every part of that person’s body. When this would happen then shame would depart from him and he would not care what he is saying nor what is being said about him. Then the Satan would blow unto him and after that his modesty would be completely destroyed. Then he would not feel ashamed even if the chastity of his women is being defiled."(4) 5. Zaid b. Al-Shahham narrated, Abu Abdullah Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq (a.s) said, " The house where music is played is not safe from sudden disasters. Supplications at such a place are not answered. Angels do not enter this place." (5) 6. AL-Hasan b. haron said, I heard Abu Abdullah (a.s.) saying, " Singing is a gathering which Allah not looking at its members, and it came from what the Almighty Allah said," And of men is he who takes instead frivolous discourse to lead astray from Allah's path…"(31: 6) (6) 7. Imam Abu-Al-Hasan Ali Al-Riza (a.s.) Said: "One who avoids songs shall be provided by Almighty Allah (S.W.T) a tree which will produce such a melodious sound as has never been heard by anyone. But one who has not kept himself aloof from songs will not be able to hear this sound."(7) Consensus of Sunni and Shiite scholars on forbiddance of singing 1. Sheikh Al-Tosi said: Singing is forbidden , its doer is a libertine, his testimony is refused (8). He Also said in another occasion: Singing is forbidden, weather it was the voice of singer, or came from wood or utter e.g. (sticks, drums, flute, music instruments and others.) 2. Ibn Edreis Alheli: Singing is forbidden. It is prolongation and vibration of sound with variation of the pitch to such an extent, its doer is a libertine, and his testimony is rejected, wither it (singing) was in poetry or Quran. Also its listener , wither he believed in its allowance or forbiddance. (9) 3. Almuhaqiq Albahrani said: there is no controversy about it as I know.(10) 4. Sayed Al-Sistani said, " All songs (al-ghinã’) are harãm. Based on the definition that we accept, al-ghinã’ is the entertaining expression by way of tunes that are common to those who provide entertainment and amusement. In this prohibition, we should include the recitation of the Holy Qur’ãn, supplications (du‘ãs), and songs of praise of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) uttered to the accompaniment of those tunes [that are used by the entertainers]. The prohibition of reciting other non-entertaining expressions —like songs intended to lift the morale [of fighters]— is based on compulsory precaution. However, the tune that cannot be described as such is not harãm by itself."(11) 5. Sunnis also coincided on forbidden singing but only a few, and one of those who stated the forbiddance is Abu Hanifa. Ibn Alqiaem said, "Imam Abu Hanifah has perhaps the harshest view from amongst the four famous Imams of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). His school of thought is the strictest, for he detested singing and considered it sinful. As for his disciples, they have explicitly confirmed the prohibition of listening to all musical amusements and pastimes, including wind instruments (mazamer) all types of tambourines, hand drums (duff) and even the striking of sticks (al-qadeeb). They have asserted that such actions constitute disobedience to Allah and that the performer of such action is sinful, therefore necessitating rejection of his testimony. They even went further and said to listen to it is a libertine and enjoying it is infidelity." (12) 6. One of those who forbidden singing is the doctrine of Ahmad b. Hanbal , ibn Al-Qaiem said: His own son and student, Abdullah, relates that his father said," Singing sprouts hypocrisy in the heart; it doesn’t please me." Then he quoted Malik speech, "No one do it but a libertine." (13) 7. Altabari said, " The scholars of all regions are agreed that singing is makrooh (un-desired) and should be prevented. Although Ibraheem ibn Sa’d and ‘Ubayd-Allah al-‘Anbari differed from the majority, (it should be noted that) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Adhere to the majority.” And whoever dies differing from the majority, dies as a Jahili (pre-Islam infidel) .(13) Excluded from the forbiddance of singing! One thing is excluded from the forbiddance of singing which was stated by scholars I the past until now, which is the singing of women on weddings, but under conditions stated by sheikh Mohamed Eshaq Alfaiadh (May Allah protect him) when he said " Women singing on weddings is excluded from it (forbiddance) but under conditions: 1. to not include Haram (forbidden) things e.g. drums beats, and falsehood talk. 2. to not allow men to enter with them. 3. to avoid getting their voices out loud that cause irritation of lust, otherwise it is forbidden. (14) But Sayed Alsistani (May Allah protect him) not allowing any of that even with those conditions, also he doesn’t allow women dancing front of other women. The philosophy behind forbidden music To study the meaning of singing will make the purpose behind forbidden singing clearer, thus by giving a fast glance at the result of singings we will be facing the following corruptions: 1. influencing and invitation to immoralities. Experience has shown many of social members who are under influence of music and the rhythm of singing have left the guidance path and went after desires and evils . The singing gatherings are considered as centers of variety of evils, and the reason behind these evils is singing. We could read in some reports in foreign newspapers that in a gathering of a group of boys and girls, a special music was played there with a special form of singing, then it agitated the boys and girls until they attacked each others, and did a shameful scandals which we feel shy to mention them. When we read in the Islamic traditions: ( singing grows hypocrisy), it’s a reality pointing at this truth because the spirit of hypocrisy is the spirit of corruption with evils and abandoning piety. If some of the narrations that angels do not enter a house where singing is played, that is because the pollution of evils, and the angels are pure, demanding purity, and they are being offended by these spoiled atmospheres. 2. Heedless to remembering Allah The amusement expression which was translated to singing in some of the Islamic traditions, is referring to the reality of turning human into a drank slave of desires until he being heedless to remember Allah. 3. damaging the nerves Singing and music are one of the main factors of Anesthesia nerve. In other word: Substance enters the body through and drinking like wine. Sometimes through smelling and the sense of smell like cocaine, and by injection like Morphine, and sometimes though hearing senses like singing!. That is why singing and gleeful music make people look ecstatic sometimes like drunk once. Sometimes it doesn’t get into that level, but it shows little numbness, thus many of the corruptions of narcotic drugs founded in singing, doesn’t matter if that narcotism was weak or strong. By looking through the details of the music celebrities biographies, we could find out that they gradually, faced problems, and psychological traumas through their life until they lost their nerves piecemeal. Some of them were afflicted with mental illnesses, some of them lost their nerves and went to psychiatric sanatorium, some of them were paralyzed and inflicted, and some of them had strokes for the high blood pressure while playing music. Some specialized books of the harmful effects of music on the human nerves mentioned some cases of famous musicians and singers who had strokes an sudden death while performing, and they lost their lives in that event. Briefly, we could say that the harmful effects of singing and music in the nerves system can lead to madness, they effect on the heart and causing high blood pressure, and other damaging effects. Learned from the statistics of death figures in our era, that the rate of sudden death was increased comparing to the past. Many reasons were mentioned and was among them singing and music. 4. singing is one of the means of colonialism Expansionists have always been wary and afraid of the alertness of the people, especially the youth of society. This is why one of their many strategies for the success of their sinister plans and continuation of their rule is to distract and keep them busy through spiritually unhealthy entertainment and amusement. Making centers for corruption, bars and clubs for gambling, etc., and investing in music and singing, are some of the most important policies they have undertaken in order to keep the people busy and possess their minds. Today, narcotics not only being commercial, but it is also one of the main political means. The colonialism politics looking forward to finding centers immorality, casinos, and other means of amusement and corruption. One of them is spreading and expansion singing and music, and its one o the main means which the colonizers insisting on using it to narcosis the awareness of people. Therefore music became the biggest importance in the world media and the main means of media. Great words of the infallibles about the forbidden of listening to singing The Holy Prophet (S) said," Singing is a ladder to Adultery." The Holy Prophet (S) also said, “Whenever a person begins singing, two Shaitans (satans) alight upon his shoulders and continue to beat their heels upon his Chest, till the time he stop.” Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: "Music is the nest of hypocrisy."
